Antelope Events

The geographic location of the town of Antelope allows it to have some of the best weather in Oregon.  Most days are sunny and this area is in the high desert at 2,595 feet above sea level, so it sees little rain or snow.  With such great weather it is no surprise that Antelope is right around the corner from some truly excellent hunting and fishing spots and some great roads to ride a motorcycle.  However when you have stared through the scope too long, your arm is tired from flipping your fly rod all day, or you have been in the saddle too long, it is nice to know that there is somewhere not too far away, that you can resupply, regain a little sanity, maybe even meet someone like minded.

The Antelope General Store will host Special Events, from Concerts to Tastings, Cook Offs and Themed Festivals, Comedy Shows, Hunting Seminars, Fishing Derbies, etc.  If you are looking for what is going on, here is where I will post it.  If you are looking for a place to have your next event please get in touch, I am looking forward to working with the community to create some truly special events.

Now it is time to tell the world the Pacific North West's best kept little secret...

The town of Antelope is something of a ghost town and that has allure for some, all the cool old buildings and the great stories that go with them.  One can spend all day checking out the old town taking pictures and making memories.  However, that isn't for every one.  Here are some other things to do in the area.

HORSEBACK RIDING

The area has not been developed much since the days of the old west.  Since the area has more sunny days and generally more temperate weather than most of the state, Antelope is a great place to bring your horse and get some time in the saddle.  Coming soon... Professional Guided Trail Rides, I am also working on a Horse Drawn Carriage to be available for special events.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

I am an avid bicyclist and at this time I am not aware of where the trails are that Bicycles are allowed on but watch this spot I will be seeking them out and I will list them here and share information about them.  If you have info on local mountain biking trails please let me know and I will pass it on.

RAFTING & FLOAT TUBING
FISHING & HUNTING

The John Day River is renowned for some of the best fresh water fishing in Oregon.  There are a variety of naturally spawned fish hiding in this river that will leave anglers of all ages & skill levels telling their "fish tales" for years to come.

For those who have the opportunity to hunt in the area, I have been told, "best hunting in the state."  So get your dressing kit ready, and make some space in the freezer!

GHOST TOWN & MUSEUMS

The Town of Antelope is rich in history, it also happens to be a living "Ghost Town."  Though there is a population there it is a fraction of what it once was, and there are old abandoned buildings left from the early days here.  At one time Antelope had enough going on to support two news papers, now the tiny building that housed one sits vacant a short walk from the store.  The old buildings make good subjects for photography projects especially when combined with the epic Central Oregon sunsets.

Don't forget to check out the museums, the Town has converted several of the old unused buildings into museums dedicated to local history, visit them and learn about the history of this part of Oregon.  If you like Ghost Towns from The Old West, you will love Antelope.

The John Day River is just a few miles from Antelope, and if you are looking to go rafting or kayaking or maybe spend a lazy day floating on the river with friends this may be a great place to spend your next day off.

HIKING & EXPLORING FOSSILS

The Clarno Unit is a part of the is part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and is located about 10 miles outside of Antelope.  There you can go for a hike and see fossils from the Cenozoic Era.  There are trails there so you can experience a walk through our planet's history. Please do not disturb anything at the Clarno Unit, this area is protected so it is not legal to collect here.

If you would like to collect a few fossils for your collection I encourage you to visit the collection site behind the high school in The Town of Fossil, there is a small fee but it is worth it. I have been there and was able to find some Fossilized Jacaranda Leaves and even a seed pod that hadn't quite become a fossil yet.  Take the kids, it is a great place to learn about the planet we live on and get some cool fossils to remember your trip.
